How Virginia withholding works
State form: VA-4.
Virginia's formula: from annual gross subtract $8,750 plus $930 per personal/dependent exemption (E1) and $800 per age-65/blindness exemption (E2), apply the bracket schedule to the result, round the annual tax to whole dollars, and divide by pay periods. The flat $8,750 applies to every filer in the withholding formula — the higher married figure you may have seen is a return-side rule.
Current parameters
| formula | T = (G x P) - [$8,750 + (E1 x $930) + (E2 x $800)]; W/H = W / P |
|---|---|
| standard deduction in withholding formula | 8,750 |
| standard deduction return context | See the cited publication |
| personal dependent exemption E1 each | 930 |
| age65 or blind exemption E2 each | 800 |
| brackets annual taxable income T | 4 entries (see the cited publication) |
| notes | QUIRK: although the publication's preamble describes the standard deduction as $8,750 single / $17,500 married-joint, the withholding FORMULA itself subtracts a flat $8,750 for every filer regardless of filing status - the $17,500 figure is return-side. Increased standard deduction is scheduled to sunset after TY2026 (reverting to $3,000/$6,000). Tables are approximate; formula is exact. |
