How Vermont withholding works

State form: W-4VT.

Vermont computes per pay period: subtract $5,400 per exemption (prorated to the period) from the period's wages and run the result through the period's bracket thresholds (the annual thresholds divided by periods, as the GB-1210 tables print them) at the single or married rates.

Current parameters

allowance per exemption annual5,400
brackets annual single5 entries (see the cited publication)
brackets annual married5 entries (see the cited publication)
notesBrackets apply to wages AFTER subtracting allowances ($5,400 each). Percentage-method tables per pay period plus wage-bracket charts. If no W-4VT, employer may use federal W-4 data; extra federal withholding on W-4 line 6 increases VT withholding by 30% of that amount. Employer-paid Child Care Contribution 0.44% of wages is NOT employee withholding - noted, not modeled.

What this page covers — and what it doesn't

State method only; Vermont has no local income taxes. One W-4VT rule is not modeled: if you ask for extra federal withholding, Vermont adds 30% of that extra amount to your Vermont withholding.
