How Utah withholding works
State form: Publication 14.
Utah's per-period schedules: tax your period's federal taxable wages at 4.45% (the rate in force for pay periods on or after June 1, 2026; it was 4.50% before), then subtract a base allowance ($485 a year single / $970 married, prorated) reduced by 1.3% of wages over the exempt amount ($9,348 / $18,696), with whole-dollar rounding at each step.
Current parameters
| flat rate pct | 4.45 |
|---|---|
| effective | Withholding schedules in Pub 14 Rev. 4/26 are effective for pay periods beginning on or after June 1, 2026 (prior schedules withheld at 4.5%) |
| formula | Per-period schedule (Schedules 1-8 by pay period and single/married status): withholding = line 2 minus line 6, floored at 0, where line 2 = Utah taxable wages x 0.0445; line 6 = max(0, base allowance - 0.013 x max(0, wages - exempt amount)) |
