How Rhode Island withholding works
State form: RI W-4.
Rhode Island's percentage method: from annualized wages subtract $1,000 per exemption (the exemption disappears entirely once wages pass $290,800 a year) and apply the single all-status schedule. There is no standard deduction in Rhode Island withholding.
Current parameters
| applies to | all filing statuses (single schedule) |
|---|---|
| exemption per allowance annual | 1,000 |
| exemption phaseout | exemption is $0 when period wages exceed thresholds equivalent to $290,800/year (e.g. weekly >$5,592.31, monthly >$24,233.33) |
| brackets annual | 3 entries (see the cited publication) |
| notes | Percentage method pp.9-10 plus wage-bracket rate tables per period. No standard deduction in the withholding computation - wages less $1,000-per-exemption only. Since Jan 1, 2020 employers may NOT rely on federal W-4; Form RI W-4 is required in addition to federal W-4. |
