How North Dakota withholding works
For a 2020-or-later W-4, North Dakota annualizes your taxable wages and applies the Annual Percentage Method Table for your Step 1(c) filing status (0% up to $57,625 single / $57,500 married / $78,475 head of household, then 1.95%, then 2.50%), and rounds the per-period result to the nearest dollar.
Current parameters
| form note | North Dakota has no state withholding form; employers use the federal Form W-4. The booklet has separate percentage-method tables for employees with a pre-2020 W-4 (allowance-based) and a 2020-or-later W-4 (worksheet-based). |
|---|---|
| pre2020 allowance value annual | 5,050 |
| annual percentage table 2020plus single | 3 entries (see the cited publication) |
| annual percentage table 2020plus married filing jointly | 3 entries (see the cited publication) |
| annual percentage table 2020plus head of household | 3 entries (see the cited publication) |
| pre2020 annual table7 note | Pre-2020 W-4 annual Table 7 (wages after allowances) uses the same thresholds: Single/HoH-style single table $57,625 / $258,450 and Married $57,500 / $168,525 at 1.95% then 2.50%; HoH pre-2020 uses the single table. |
What this page covers — and what it doesn't
State method only; North Dakota has no local income taxes. One honest note: the booklet's own worked example for the case below prints $14.00 a week, but that figure does not follow from the booklet's percentage table (it gives $13) — the example appears to be a stale carryover, and this calculator follows the table, as payroll systems do.
