How New Jersey withholding works

State form: NJ-W4.

New Jersey's percentage method: subtract $1,000 per exemption from annualized wages and apply the annual rate table for the box checked on your NJ-W4 — Rate A (single or married filing separately), Rate B (joint, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse), or the Rate C/D/E table your Line 3 wage chart selects.

rate selectionRate A: NJ-W4 Box 1 (Single) or Box 3 (Married, separate). Rate B: Box 2 (Joint), Box 4 (Head of Household) or Box 5 (Qualifying widow(er)) with Line 3 blank. If the employee completes Line 3 (wage chart), use the rate letter selected (A-E). Subtract allowance value x exemptions from wages, then apply the rate table.
