How Montana withholding works

State form: MW-4.

Montana's formula is W = A + B x (G − C) per pay period: the A and C amounts and the B rate come from the table for your MW-4 status (1a single, married filing separately, or MFJ with both spouses working; 1b MFJ with one earner; 1c head of household), chosen by your annualized wages, and the result rounds to the nearest dollar.

Current parameters

formulaW = A + B x (G - C), where G = gross wages for the pay period, B = rate, A and C from the table for the employee's MW-4 status box and pay period; result rounded to nearest dollar. Annual-period table values shown; the guide publishes equivalent per-period (weekly/biweekly/semimonthly/monthly) A and C values.
annual table status 1a single mfs or mfj both working3 entries (see the cited publication)
annual table status 1b mfj or qualifying surviving spouse3 entries (see the cited publication)
annual table status 1c head of household3 entries (see the cited publication)
zero bracket noteThe 0% band tops equal the 2026 federal standard deductions ($16,100 single / $32,200 MFJ / $24,150 HoH). House Bill 337 reduced the top rate from 5.9% to 5.65% for 2026 and allowances were abolished; the method mirrors the federal W-4 (steps 2-4 adjustments apply).
