How Iowa withholding works

State form: IA W-4 (44-019).

Iowa's formula: subtract the annual deduction for your status ($13,000 for most filers, $19,500 head of household, $26,000 married with a non-earning spouse) prorated to the period, apply the flat 3.80%, then subtract the total allowance dollars stated on your 2024-or-later IA W-4 (older forms: $40 per allowance), and add any additional amount you requested.

Current parameters

formula stepsT1 = G - D (gross pay-period wages minus deduction D); T2 = T1 x 3.80%; T3 = T2 - (W / P) (W = total allowance amount on IA W-4, a dollar credit; P = pay periods per year); T4 = T3 + A (additional withholding requested)

allowance creditFor IA W-4s from 2023 or earlier, each allowance = $40 credit (W = allowances x $40); 2024+ IA W-4 states the total allowance amount in dollars
