How Indiana withholding works
State form: WH-4.
Indiana withholds at a flat 2.95% of pay after exemptions ($1,000 per personal exemption, $1,500 per dependent, $1,500 per first-time dependent, $3,000 per adopted child, prorated to the period). Your county of residence on January 1 adds its own rate on the same taxable pay — all 92 county rates are built in, from Departmental Notice #1 (October 1, 2026 edition).
Current parameters
| flat rate pct | 2.95 |
|---|---|
| personal exemption annual per exemption | 1,000 |
| dependent exemption annual per dependent | 1,500 |
| adopted child exemption annual per child | 3,000 |
| county tax | County rate (below) applies to the same taxable income as the state tax, based on the employee's Indiana county of residence on Jan. 1 (or county of principal employment if resident out of state on Jan. 1). Rates below are the resident county rates from Departmental Notice #1 effective Oct. 1, 2026 (R47 / 10-26); the Jan. 1, 2026 edition was superseded Oct. 1, 2026 - only Boone (0.0171) changed mid-year per the notice's asterisk. |
What this page covers — and what it doesn't
State plus county-of-residence tax. County rates are the resident rates; if you lived outside Indiana on January 1, your county of principal employment applies instead.
