How Hawaii withholding works

State form: HW-4.

Hawaii annualizes your federal taxable wages, subtracts $1,144 per HW-4 allowance plus a $4,350 additional allowance amount every employee receives, and applies its withholding brackets (which top out at 7.90% — lower than Hawaii's return rates). With no HW-4 on file, withholding defaults to single with zero allowances.

Current parameters

method detailAppendix Part 1 annualized method (Parts 2 alternative per-period method and Part 3 wage tables also provided): annualize wages; subtract $1,144 x HW-4 allowances; subtract $4,350 extra lump sum withholding allowance (every employee); apply annual withholding-rate table for single (incl. head of household) or married; divide by pay periods. NOTE: withholding rates top out at 7.90% - they are NOT the 1.4%-11% return rates under HRS 235-51 (statute caps the rate taken into account for withholding at 8%).
