Worked example

Worked example. Computed with the Employer's Guide method: single, $2,000 biweekly, 2 exemptions. The guide's own DE-W4NR example checks the bracket math: tax on $12,000 of taxable income is $357.00 before the $110-per-exemption credits.
Federal income tax $156.15 · Social Security $124.00 · Medicare $29.00 · Delaware withholding $80.74 · Take-home $1,610.11 per paycheck (biweekly)

How Delaware withholding works

State form: DE-W4.

Delaware annualizes your federal taxable wages, subtracts its standard deduction ($3,250 single or married filing separately; $6,500 married filing jointly — head of household files as single in Delaware withholding), applies the all-status bracket schedule, then subtracts $110 per exemption.

Current parameters

method detailApproved annualized method (Employer's Guide Sec. 17): annualize pay (daily x 300, weekly x 52, biweekly x 26, semimonthly x 24, monthly x 12); subtract standard deduction; apply Tax Computation Table; subtract $110 credit per personal exemption/allowance; divide by pay periods. Wage-bracket tables in the back of the Employer's Guide circular are the alternative. Bracket table, $3,250 standard deduction and $110 credit are printed on the official Form DE-W4 / DE-W4R / DE-W4NR (Rev. 20220304, revenuefiles.delaware.gov/2021/DE-W4.pdf).

certificate ruleEmployer's Guide Sec. (c): obtain signed federal Form W-4, W-4A, or Delaware form SD/W4A / DE-W4 at time of employment. A pre-2020 federal W-4 on file remains usable; a 2020-or-later federal W-4 (no allowances) cannot be used for Delaware - the Delaware DE-W4 supplies the allowance count. No certificate: withhold as single with no allowances.
