How Connecticut withholding works

State form: CT-W4.

Connecticut has no percentage method. Withholding follows TPG-211's 16 steps keyed to the code letter on your CT-W4: annualize wages, subtract the Table A personal exemption (which phases out as salary rises), compute the Table B initial tax, add the Table C phase-out amount and the Table D recapture amount, then reduce the total by the Table E personal credit for your salary band.

method detail16-step Withholding Calculation Rules - DRS states expressly: 'There is no percentage method available to determine Connecticut wage withholding.' Annualize wages; subtract Table A personal exemption (by code, phased out $1,000 per $1,000 of salary over threshold); Table B initial tax; add Table C 2%-rate phase-out add-back; add Table D tax recapture; multiply by (1 - Table E personal tax credit decimal); divide by pay periods; then add CT-W4 Line 2 additional / subtract Line 3 reduced amounts. 2026 rules and tables unchanged from 2025.

What this page covers — and what it doesn't

The code letter does the work of a filing status: A married filing separately, B head of household, C married filing jointly, D highest withholding, E exempt, F single. No CT-W4 on file means withholding at 6.99% with no exemption.
